The Artswalk is a
project that will help enhance Jackson as a healthy, livable, and
community-oriented city that is attractive to new residents and new
business.
The Artswalk is the
keystone to many of our community’s larger goals. It is the central
connection to continuing the expansion of very successful Falling
Waters Trail across Jackson County, and eventually linking trails
across Michigan. It will connect Jackson’s downtown with the
growing art community to the north, contributing to economic
development along the Mechanic St. corridor. The Artswalk would
also provide a recreational space near downtown for physical
fitness, cultural opportunities, and community events. Finally, the
Artswalk provides access and protection to the Grand River where it
winds through our city.
There are
complications to completing this project. Space is limited along
the river, requiring cooperation between Norfolk Southern railroad
and the City. Public safety is a concern for all involved and
liability must be addressed in this type of project. We are all
acutely aware that resources in this Michigan economy are always
limited. We must resolve these issues within the limits of our
funding resources, capture new funding for the project, and maintain
the funding that has already been allocated.
We believe that the
value of this project to our community and the wider region far
outweighs the challenges in completing the Artswalk. All key
players, including property owners, the railroad operator, and the
residents of Jackson can all benefit from this project.
We want to
focus on the three goals of the project and support the original plan
for the project, including:
-
Connect the
Arts District to Downtown Jackson
-
Improve
community access to the Grand River
-
Extend the
trail network that includes the Falling Waters Trail, Inter-City
Trail, and section of River Walk in front of Consumers
We
suggest focus
on the three goals of the project and support the original plan for
the Arstwalk,
including:
-
an off-street
trail accommodating biking, walking, and rolling
-
park space
incorporating public art and river access
-
a connection
from the Toy House to the Armory Arts Village and Art634
